Shield of Achilles

Personal project featuring the shield of Achilles as described in Homer’s Iliad. It is a round, medium-sized, Late Bronze Age embossed shield. For its decoration, I pulled designs from a variety of Bronze Age Greek artifacts, ranging from the 17th to 12th centuries BC, which I adjusted to follow Homer’s description.

I then manually traced over some 200 reference images in Photoshop to create Alpha maps for the texture creation phase in Substance Painter.

My aim was to produce one massive PBR texture, fitted onto a low-poly mesh. Once I had made the Albedo, Roughness, Metallic, Normal, and Ambient Occlusion maps, I used Marmoset Toolbag to render the shield. With Marmoset, I produced 43 animated close up shots, which I then edited with Premiere on top of a narration of Homer’s text by Yannis Zouganelis.

Helen of Troy

3D Model of what Helen of Troy would have probably looked like. A range of artifacts from the 17th to 13th centuries BC were used for her dress, its colors, and patterns. A 14th century BC figurine of a woman found in late bronze age Sparta, Helen's home, was important in shaping the appearance of her clothes.

I created the model using 3Ds Max, while the clothes were draped over it using fabric simulation in Marvelous Designer. Some detailing took place in ZBrush, and the textures were made with Substance Painter.

Achilles

In this personal project, I tried to produce a historically accurate representation of what Achilles would have looked like, as a Late Bronze Age warrior. This is my most satisfactory project in terms of historical accuracy, since all of my references are dated precisely to the late 13th, early 12th centuries BC.
